In Greece, old and new collide
By Avirama Golan

ATHENS - On Greek television, a commercial for a movie channel shows a strange chase scene: A police car careening along a winding mountain trail in pursuit of an old woman on a donkey. The woman, dressed in black, has a scarf on her head and a cane in her hand. On a mountainside bend, the car screeches to a halt, and a police officer in blue shouts at the woman in American English: "Stop! Pull over!" The old woman looks at him with curiosity that turns into astonishment, then anger. He approaches her and barks an order in the same ludicrous English: "Get away from the vehicle and stand to the side!" She refuses. When he points a gun at her, the old woman bursts out in juicy Greek: "What's the matter with you?! Have you gone mad?! Have you lost your senses?! Get out of here, you and your nonsense!" She waves her cane at the terrified policeman, furiously peppers him with a rapid-fire string of curses, spurs her donkey and rides off at a gallop. The wretched policeman gets on his radio and calls for backup, and the text on the screen happily tells the viewer that the man has seen too many movies on this particular channel.
