Brigadier-General David A. Fraser

, Commander, Multi National Brigade (Regional Command South), Afghanistan gave a wonderful speech at the Empire Club today on "Afghanistan: A personal Reflection".  First, Fraser has come home but part of his soul now includes Afghanistan, a country he truly loves. His love for the country and respect for its people is a lasting testiment to his work during the past year. His legacy will include greater security, thousands of new schools and hope for the kids of Afghanistan. Life is slowly returning to the streets of Afghanistan's cities and Town's. The Afghan children are not hungry for food but for books and learning. They represent the future. "They want a pen" stated the general and an opportunity to get an education." The Canadian forces have given the kids Hope and opportunity to learn.

The Afghan government and people direct the efforts of the Nato forces in fighting the insurgency; in rebuilding this great country, in re-establishing agriculture, commerce and learning. The General has seen progress in reconstruction, an improvement and expansion of Afghan security forces, and the rebirth of public and state institutions.

The general also reminded us of the power of women within the home. To reach the women, however, it was necessary to provide employment to their sons and husbands. The young men would then have money to get married, have kids and establish a family while looking after mom, the grandparents and the their extended families. With a family they would come on side and work to improve their communities. Bravo for the general. The western media to date have failed to recognize the importance and  power of women in traditional societies. The men would work with us to improve the communities and protect their families. With food on the table, security for the kids the women would be won over. The men would also get extra benefits from happy wives and things would improve greatly. He is absolutely correct. This process has already started; it must now accelerate.

In Bosnia stated Fraser, Canada was involved in reconstruction for 12 years. Canada is capable and willing to make a similar contribution to Afghanistan, provided the Afghan government and people want Canada to remain. Canada will recall its people home when asked to leave.

Excellent speech! He is not only one of the best field commanders in the world he also a great and original thinker. We should all be extremely proud of this great Canadian leader.
