In six hot, windy days of uncontrolled blazes, Greece lost a significant part of its dwindling forest land. The massive fires, have killed at least 64 people and gutted hundreds of homes in scores of southern villages. Fires are still burning today after 9 days.
The inferno also destroyed fragile mountain ecosystems - that will require decades to revive - and an entire rural way of life, threatening to turn thousands of villagers into environmental refugees. We must help them stay on their land.
AHEPA and The Daughters of Penelope of Canada have establishing a Long-Term Plan to aid Greece by providing relief to victims and repairing the economic catastrophe of the affected regions. The Program includes:
1. Assistance to Victims
2. Assistance in Replenishing Farm Animals & Feed
3. Assistance in re-establishing Olive Groves
4. Re-Forestation (Plant your Roots in Greece)
5. Other needs as they are better defined
AHEPA Family has a Medical Mobile Unit traveling in Greece with AHEPA and other Doctors.
As you can see, this is a long term program with support and assistance requested from all Greeks throughout the Diaspora and our friends and Phil-Hellenes.
