Elizabeth: The Golden Age. 4/5. A must see movie. This movie has academy award winner written all over it.
The virgin queen is content to a mother to her subjects but secretly covets love, romance and children. Forced to rule with an iron fist when an assasin attempts to assasinate her, she has Queen Anne, the rival Catholic Queen of Scotland, executed. Anne loses her head and she is also a pawn in a larger political chess game played with the King of Spain who uses the execution as an excuse to invade England with his Catholic allies in France. The English are outnumbered, outgunned and have a smaller fleet. This is a time, according to an English prophet when one empire will fall and another will rise. The Spanish Armanda arrives off the English coast as the French come to the aid of Spain off the coast of Normandy. Elizabeth gathers her troops and orders the English fleet to attack. The heavens turn against the Spanish fleet and a northern storm destroys the Spanish Armanda. The Spanish Empire, declines and the English, Protestant empire rises, as the prophecy is realized. |
