By: Matt Parkinson Click to hear a track from The Spicoli's: Lifeless Ordinary (3 MB ) Hailing from Burlington, a city that has had its hand in the progression of new rock and alternative for years, The Spicoli’s tout a style that may sound like party-rock, but has inspirations and roots in anything but. Taking a cue from glam rock and California punk, the band’s front man, Brandon has an energy during live shows that rivals even the most revered stage performers. Their music is indeed addicting and while you find yourself getting caught up in high-energy riffs, you will be treated to songs mixed with with a more down tempo and melodic feel. Truly a great sound for an album.
Playing the Van’s Warped tour has increased the band’s exposure, and given them the necessary experience when it comes to touring. The past couple years have brought two independent Spicoli's albums: Liv'n the Fullest (2003) and Blood, Sweat & Beers (2005). I had a sit-down with the band and found out they had something clever to say about their big goals.
The cast of The Spicoli's, you will probably see them next year on the World Poker Tour. How did The Spicoli's happen? Did you guys know each other before hand or was it a case of; “Hey we’re wicked, let’s make a band?” It was quite a process, and the process seems to still be going. Murray went around trying to convince everyone to be in the band. Finally after many bribes and countless sexual favours everyone agreed. The original singer quit, I tried out, and eventually landed the job (no sexual favours required). Years go by, and Scott (original guitar player) leaves, we replace him with Tristan, and as of this moment we are currently trying out new drummers, because Ryan is moving to Australia. Eventually we'll get it right ... I’m sure you'll get a better inside look at the life of The Spicoli’s when our “behind the music” comes out in 2046. What has been your favourite gig or show, and what reasons contributed to it being so? Warped tours are always wicked to play. Just being able to say you’re playing warped tour, no matter what stage, is pretty fucking cool! But, my all time favourite shows to play are House Parties. They seem to be the most memorable times, they are always such a blast, and people appreciate a fast Party band at a huge kegger! Holding their own; on stage or in an alleyway.
In terms of coming up with new material, where does it begin for you and what inspires you the most? It’s pretty basic. One of us will come in with a riff, and then everyone will throw their own parts on top of it. Before you know it we have entire songs after one jam. It’s just a matter of whether or not we are all into it. If it becomes a process, then it's not worth writing. The best songs are the ones that just happen. As far as what inspires us ... that’s a tough question, because we’re not the kind of band that sets out to sound like something or someone. If it sounds good to us, we’ll write it, there is no outside influence really. Keep it fast and fun, and throw the occasion medium paced song in there to give the drummer a rest - haha, damn drummers! If you had a time machine and could jam with any band or musician, who would it be? Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) and Bradley Nowell (sublime), because you know going in to that jam session your stepping into some sort of intense party, and writing the most insane music this planet would ever feast their ears on! What do the stars hold for The Spicoli's? Girl pants and emo hair! To find out more about The Spicoli’s visit their website, http://www.thespicolis.com or http://www.myspace.com/thespicolis.
