ASA for the prevention of stroke |

The use of acetysalicylic acid (ASA) for primary prevention of cardiovascular problems remains controversial.
However, according to University of Ottawa Michel Le May, MD, Associate Professor, Division of Cardiology, a Heart Institute, ASA is effective when used for secondary prevention. In a study involving 135,000 high-risk patients enrolled in randomized trials, ASA significantly reduced the occurrence of myocardial infraction by 33%, stroke by 25% and cardiovascular mortality by 1/6. However, always remember to consult with your family doctor before taking ASA to be safe in its use as there is a risk with ASA causing internal bleeding. |
