Aids has been with us for 25 years. Since that time millions have died around the world. It's estimated that more than 40 million people are currently living with HIV. Dr. Wainberg compares Aids/HIV to the Asian Tsunami that struck last year. '' In terms of deaths", he states that the Aids Tsunami "strikes every month".
With respect to Toronto, the AIDS Committee of Toronto provides the following statistics: 1. Approximately 60,000 people in Canada are living with HIV/AIDS and another 20,000 are infected but do not know; 2. Toronto accounted for 65% of new HIV infection in Ontario; 3. Women and children are being infected in larger and larger numbers; and 4. AIDS is still fatal. There is no cure. Prevention is still the best defence. Toronto has the largest gay and lesbian community in Canada. Many young people still have multiple partners and do not want to use a condom. They think it will not happen to them. They are young, horny and stupid, says a friend of the community who did not want his name used. To make things more complicated there are still closet members who have wives and kids but live a double life. They are the worst, says David, because they have multiple partners and expose their wives, family and multiple partners with their duplicity. Sex should be fun and not be a loaded weapon. A person with multiple partners is a loaded gun. "Think of it", says David, "one person can infect hundreds." Advances in medicine have stalled. Coctail drugs are expensive and do not cure Aids. They prolong life but it is not a quality existence. Only prevention protects you. Use a condom and consider a stable relationship. Love need not kill you. Sex and love enhance the quality of life and human existence but only if care is exercised. |
