To win the war we must win the hearts and minds of our Iraqi brothers and sisters.
The terrorists do not serve the people. The terrorists want to create chaos in Iraq. Chaos is also created by bad publicity. Extreme provocation is used to provoke retaliation that is, in the heat of battle, misguided. The insurgency must not define the conflict on its terms. Force is only a means to political ends. The west represents freeedom, liberty and equality. The American dream represents a better future. The troops must not forget why they are in Iraq. They are there to serve and protect the Iraqi people. The people are on our side. To win hearts and minds political and economic means must be used. The Iraqis must also assume more direct responsibility for their own security. Better that Iraqi units enter Iraqi homes and not American marines. The marines are the best in the world at what they do best. Now they must play more of a supporting role. The leadership must guide the frontline troops with clear objectives, discipline and they must reinforce core values. As Americans return to civilian life they can be proud of their accomplishments just as their fathers were proud of their victories in WWII. |
