1. Lee. Acclaimed chef Susur Lee offers trendy tapas-style dining in a paired-down version of his famed Susur restaurant. Your taste buds will thank you; your wallet won't. 603 King St. W. 416-504-7867

2. Brant House. Tapas-style, communal dining; the tables at this restaurant resemble church benches and are just as comfy. 3. La Vecchia. A Young and Eligible staple, this family-run restaurant features Italian dining at its finest. Unpretentious and always atmospheric. Reservations recommended on weekends. 2405A Yonge Street 416-489-0630

4. Dante's. A little bit north of the city, but they deliver. Tasty, oversized portions of pizza and pasta (plus a few surprises, like beer-battered halibut) make-up the bulk of this menu. Dine with friends (or people who love to eat). 267 Baythorn Drive 905-881-1070

5.  Yenching. A little cramped at times, but worth it just to sink your teeth into what should be awarded as the best fried rice north of the equator. Unique dishes, best for sharing. Bayview Village 2901 Bayview Avenue 416-226-1222

6. The Rectory Café. Perhaps the quaintest restaurant Toronto has to offer. Nestled in the Toronto Islands, this house-cum-café offers a short but sweet menu that runs a close second to its majestic views. 102 Lakeshore Avenue, Ward's Island 416-203-2152

7. Sassafraz Lounge. A paired-down menu and a friendly wait staff is ready to greet you as you settle in to listen to resident pianist Washington tickle the ivories all night (Thursday to Sunday, late night menu served). 100 Cumberland Street 416-964-2222

8. Spring Rolls. The hipsters' hangout. Huge menu silently offers anything you want, anyway you want it. Go with a group and share the many delights. Best dish: chicken teriyaki. 85 Front Street East. 416-365-ROLL
