Nato needs the Afhan mission for its own survival. After the Soviet Union and eastern bloc collapsed, Nato lost its purpose and began a sustained period of decline. A millitary alliance needs an enemy. Without a common threat, it inevitably falls apart.
Aghanistan represents the new reality and has helped revitalize the alliance. The Canadian military is leading the progressive forces calling for radical changes to confront this new enemy. Canada has won a seat at the table and now has credibility to push for radical changes. "Dito" for our military and the fine work they are doing and the leadership position they have taken. |
