Grapes and the Hellenic period in Afghanistan PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 13 October 2008

Grapes and wine are divine to the Greeks.  Grapes came to Aghanistan during the Hellenic period during the time of Alexander the Great. Alexander settled many parts of Aghanistan with his veterans. He founded several cities including Alexandria -Khandahar and another city near modern Kabul.

Hellenic monuments can still be found in many parts of Aghanistan. The Hellenic period lasted for approximately 300 years. http://flickr.com/photos/gtinn/611110345/   http://www.parc.gov.pk/articles/grapes_baloch.htm

Following the death of Alexander his empire divided into four parts with India and Aghanistan forming a central part of the Hellenic world.

The Afghans are a great collection of ethnic groups including Monguls, Greeks, Indians, Turks and Persians.

Afghanistan has great potential to become a great Islamic Republic.

Its fertile and rich valleys can again help feed its people and provide rich exports.

Canada has an important part to play in the reconstruction of Aghanistan. The Canadian forces are making a real positive difference in the lives of the Afghans and Canada should stay the course and finish the job.
