Candy By: Andrew Moran 3 Stars out of 5 Stars Starring (Alphabetical Order): Abbie Cornish, Heath Ledger, Tara Morice & Geoffrey Rush This story is a narration from an Australian man who falls in love with two kinds of Candy: a woman of the same name and heroin. The narrator changes from a smart aleck to someone trying to find a vein to inject, while Candy changes from an actress, call girl, streetwalker, and then a madwoman. Starting in Sydney, the two eventually end up in Melbourne to go clean, but they fail. This leads them to turn to finding money and heroin, while other possessions and attachments become unimportant. Candy is another story about a drug addict who tries to turn everything around when he meets with another woman called Candy, ironically Candy, which is heroin I believe, is destroying his life. Candy is a heart-felt film, which tries to make you sympathetic towards the Heath Ledger character because after falling in love he is trying to make his life better but by doing so he also destroying the woman he loves, Candy. This movie isn't really plot-driven, it's character-driven. It's not a very original story...if you've seen one junkie love story, you kind of know what to expect. But this film is made by its actors. Her emotion on-screen is so horrific and so palpable. Candy is a mediocre film but a still enjoyable one at best, mostly because of the performances of Geoffrey Rush (Shine & Pirates of the Caribbean), Tara Morice (Moulin Rouge & Salem’s Lot), Maggie Cornish (A Good Year & One Perfect Day), her emotion on-screen is so horrific and so palpable and Heath Ledger (Brokeback Mountain & A Knight’s Tale).
Acclaimed director Neil Armfield (Twelfth Night & Turn of the Screw: Britten) did a wonderful job in directing this picture. With great imagery and aerial shots, it captured the essence of each shot which was supposed to be magical yet sad in the same way. The script was also done very well, also done by Neil Armfield. Most filmmakers or critics think Voice-overs are amateurish but what Heath Ledger’s character said was unforgettable. Overall this movie was well done, but like I said the whole film is character driven. So if you’re looking for a unique kind of “junkie” love story, you won’t find it here. No, you’ll find good actors finally doing great roles. |
