Interview w/ Rashmi Rukmini

By: Andrew Moran

This is my interview with Rashmi Rukmini. Ms. Rukmini is a Line Producer for many Indian films.  Unfortunately the film she worked on did not get accepted to the Toronto Film Festival, however it will be submitted to next year’s New York Film Festival. Here is Q&A I had with Ms. Rukmini

1. What made you decide to get involved in the Film Business?

A: Well for many years I always had an interest in the business of Film.  Whether it was marketing or it was the financing of films, it was an interest I always had wanted to pursue.  And of course seeing your name on the credits on the big screen is an experience (chuckles).

2. How’d you make contacts?

A: With the sudden boom in film back in India it was easy to find people who would want to make films, a great example is Deepa Mehta.  After seeing the success of Bollywood people immediately wanted to jump into film.

3. What is your educational background and or work experience?

A: I never really had any education in film however I did work with production companies back in India as office administrators or assistant to producers. But I have worked for many years in film. Actually should be about 8 years now.

4. How many years have you been in the film business? And how many more years do you think you’ll be working?

A: About 8 years now and when you work in films its always indefinite. Unless you’re like Luc Besson (chuckles).

5. What are your main aspirations and or goals in film?

My main goal is just be in film as long as I can and eventually finance my own picture one day. I’m in the process of writing my own script now and eventually one day I’ll get it made.

6. What advice would you give to a young person who is trying to get his or her foot in the door?

A: I believe someone you interviewed said it best, “Persistence and friendliness” and knowing as many people as you can. So basically, networking.

7. And lastly, what is your favorite film and favorite director?

A: Film: Casablanca Director: Sophia Coppola
