At the famous ancient battle of Thermopylae 300 Spartans and their King stood their ground, against impossible odds, knowing they faced certain death, to delay the Persians in order  to allow the allied Greeks to prepare for the Persian invasion and were killed to the last man. With time to prepare the allied Greeks defeated the Persians.
