Edmund Schofield, a prominent defence lawyer, was arrested and charged with smuggling cocaine and marijuana into the Toronto Don Jail. He is the third lawyer charged with drug trafficking. Schofield is 72 years old and is also a former FBI agent. He should know better. A confidential police source said that Schofield provided drugs to a client inmate. He also had problems with the FBI but did not provide any details. Schofield claimed he is innocent and that the guards made a mistake. If convicted he will spend the rest of his life in jail and his life will amount to nil. He may wish to consider doing everyone a favour and hang himself, stated a former cop. Narcotics have become an aggressive cancer in our society. Last week the daughter of the Chief Justice of Alberta was charged with several criminal offences, including possession of narcotics. This new case shows just how difficult the problem has become and members of society that previously were untouched by drugs now find themselves engaged in this cancerous evil.
Narcotics are now found in all our communities. The upper classes are now victimized. There are no safe harbours. Everyone is at risk. Last year several grow-up operations were found within walking distance of several top private and public schools in Toronto, including Yorkmills Collegiate. Chinese organized crime groups control most of these grow-ups that are operating in residential areas. The laws for possession are weak and the Courts have been lax in the sentences imposed on these criminals. A better methodology, stated a high ranking former cop, is to go after their assets and seize them under proceeds of crime. The funds can be used to finance more officers and police resources on enforcemnt. Another police source advised the Toronto Times that "these things are everywhere in the City"; they are located close to schools as the schools provide affluent customers. The Law Society of Upper Canada should watch this case closely. If convicted, after a fair trial, Schofield should forthwith be disbarred. |
